Got Food?

Here is an updated video depicting Matthew's oral aversion. Our feeding specialists have suggested several techniques to lower his resistance. In this video, Terri tries to distract Matthew with an empty Coffee Mate bottle. I promise we weren't torturing him. He wasn't in his seat for long and began to whimper immediately upon seeing the baby spoon come out. For us, this is Matthew's most frustrating challenge.

One might get the impression that Matthew hadn't ordered "that" for lunch. I once thought that he just wasn't hungry; but that's does not appear to be the problem.

Once the solid food gets past his lips and into his mouth, he chews it and swallows it. For some reason, his arms flailing and head turns seem to go with the process.

Mommy sticks with the program, though, and accepts the process in an attempt to get him to eat. Thank heavens for the Mickey Button. Terri is very diligent in keeping the schedule to get food down him through the tube. She deserves a lot of credit for his growth.

I like to be around him as much as I can so I can develop this opposition to solid foods; but it is not contagious unfortunately.

Love you my little prize fighter! grandma wright

I think you got two tastes in his mouth. That would be sooo frustrating. You must have developed quite a bit of patience.

That video was a great observation. I hate it when these guys have such a difficult time after they have been through so much. You know, sometimes we all just want a break...and for something to be easy. Terri, I only know you through this blog...and from what I can tell you are one patient mommy. Pat yourself on the back for persevering through all of the trials and tribulations your family has endured. Also, thank you for visiting the Hartgraves Family blog. I am glad you got to see my little heart fighter Harrison and his big brother, William, who is also a little medical fighter too. Keep up the great (hard) work. Keep telling yourself that just like Matthew, you and Mike are amazing too.

Yes, I want to be sure that people know that we only spend a few minutes here and there trying to feed him...

most of the time we just plot him in the seat and put cheerios or something on the tray for him to "play with."

I used to try every day ... a couple times a day...
but that was too frustrating...

so... I do feel like I need to try
here and there.... just to get him to taste something... and hoping that someday he'll surprise us.

I know how hard it can be (emotionally) to constantly be trying things that your little one doesn't like. You deserve a huge pat on the back for your perseverence. Matthew will soon be lovin' on peas and applesauce. :) Keep up the good work, Mommy!

It's official... there is no flavor made by Ben & Jerry's ice cream that will tempt little Matthew. Yep, sad but true. On Saturday, Mike brought home FOUR (yes, four) different flavors of B&J and Magoo would have none of it. As a sacrifice, Terri, Mike and I made sure the B&J didn't go to waste.

What a boy!

I hope he gets it soon. Terri, you are amazing you know that?

He is one strong baby and you have made him that way!!!!

Did you all sit around him eating the B&J ice cream? Then he would see all the fun and maybe think it would be worth a try just to join in. Who am I kidding? I was there and saw the process, but I still remember a few mouthfuls going down after Grandma Wright, Kim and I clapped and got all excited. I hope it won't be too much longer before he will actually think eating is not so bad.

Love to all of you.

When I saw the title of this, I got excited... that you might tell us he's overcome this battle.

I was happy to see footage of the struggle though. Hang in there! He WILL get it!
