Terri feeds Matthew by bottle
Today Terri got to feed Matthew twice from a bottle. Terri said that Matthew was very excited and even got annoyed if she took the bottle out of his mouth. This puts to rest the fears of an "oral aversion" that can come from long periods of intubation. Babies can associate all things in their mouth negatively and have long lasting feeding problems. Thankfully it seems that won't be a problem with our little fighter.
I spoke with Pulmonologist Dr. Tracy Butler and Cardiologist Dr. Ackerman today. They are in agreement that Matthew should be on low level breathing assistance and Viagra (to insure proper vasodilatation) for 6 months to a year. This will treat his "Pulmonary Hypertension" by keeping his pulmonary artery open and working properly until he heals and matures. So for now he is on a very oxygen flow setting of .25 liters (down from 2 to 5). This low setting can easily be managed at home. This type of oxygen unit would be small enough to place in a stroller or over our shoulder. Contrast that with a tracheotomy and a respirator and you can begin to understand how thrilled we are to behold the miracle that is Matthew's progress.

What a beautiful picture! Wow what a difference a few months can make. We are so excited for you guys. Granted this isn't how you expected or wanted for that matter, it to be, but he sure looks 100x better. It's amazing what technology can do, and how far it's come. We are confident that little Matthew will continue to get better and better, and that this experience will make him stronger.
The expression on Terri's face is priceless....Keep drinking little Magoo, it will make you strong and healthy....All of the Rams players drink milk (Sorry Mike had to throw that in there)...
Take Care Guys.....Our prayers continue to be with you....

Oh, this is a wonderful picture. He finally gets to have a bottle. There's no stopping him now.
I love you.

I am the luckiest person because I got to feed Matthew a bottle tonight. It is just one of those little things that will forever be etched in my mind as one of the greatest moments of my life. A short while later Daddy was holding Matthew and singing to him. Matthew just stared into his Daddy's eyes as Daddy sang to him and rocked him. Matthew moved his lips a few times as if he was trying to sing along. It was precious!!
